Solandra maxima "Golden Chalice Vine" Organic Well-Established Plant
We offer these plants right now at 4-7" tall. They are organically grown and well-established and quite honestly one of the most gorgeous flowering vines on Earth. S. maxima is naitve to Central America. It is a thick stemmed, multi-branching tropical liana which is absolutely breathtaking. It makes a fantastic landscape plant in zones 10+ and also a great greenhouse or conservatory plant in cooler regions. The vine growth is very agressive but they can be easily trained and pruned. The leaves are dark green and are so shiny they appear to have been polished. The most impressive part of this plant is its massive bell or chalice shaped flowers that can reach sizes of 6-10" long and 4-7" wide! These flowers emit a sweet coconut scent in the evenings. Each flower begins its life a soothing yellow, and within 2-3 days it transforms into a rich golden color. This plant has been considered sacred for centuries amongst the Aztec and Mayan civilizations!
Traditional & Modern Use:
This plant is chemically similar to Brugmansia and Datura and the Aztec and Mayan cultures were very aware of this. It was traditionally employed by the Priests and Shamans in preparations for medicinal and magical concoctions. It is reported that in some remote areas of Mexico these flowers are still used today in a ceremonial context. They can be witnessed on the walls of Aztec and Mayan temples. A sacred wonder.
