Often found in Northeastern Brazil and India Bala has gained great respect as a potent ephedrine containing plant. It has been implemented medicinally for hundreds of years but has become much more recognized since the 1930's. S. cordifolia, like other ephedrine containing plants is often used as a remedy for asthma, congestion, bronchitis, allergies and other respiratory ailments. Ephedrine can be found in some over-the-counter decongestants, but many find the plant just as effective when made into a tea. Many cultures use S. cordifolia as a weight loss aid and stimulant for energy.
