P. pentandrum is native to parts of China, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It has long been cultivated Worldwide as a streetside ornamental. It is a small tree to shrub with attractive smooth grey bark and glossy leaves. It bears massive terminal clusters of tubular white flowers. The flowers give way to the yellowish berries which are much loved by birds. The wood has long been valued for making beads and for carving. The seeds contain a terpinoid oil. In traditional medicine the leaves and bark are used for fever and cough. The aromatic leaves are often employed to make a restorative bath.
