Some believe that I. carnea is the real source of the Soma in the Hindu Rg Veda. Once the species reached South America in the 1500's it became widely used by shamans there and is still grown by them today. It's the most alkaloid-rich of all morning glories. LSA is just one of many chemicals found in this plant. Some of the shamans who work with San Pedro, add the leaves to the Cimora brew to boost the potency of the San Pedro. There are also reports of the leaves being smoked as well.
