Lonchocarpus violaceus
NOW SHIPPING WORLDWIDE FROM THE USA!
We offer these 5-7" organically grown and well established plants proudly as it is quite rare! This small-medium tree reaches heights of about 30 feet and can also be as wide as 20 feet. It is native to the West Indies and Coastal Central America. In late summer to early fall this evergreen displays masses of pea-like lavendar flowers that offer an incredibly sweet fragrance which the bees and butterflies go crazy for! It is quite tough and can handle many types of climate but does not deal with freezing temperatures. For anyone who lives in a cooler area, this tree also makes a great container plant.
Traditional & Modern Use:
The Yucatec Maya employ this tree in the preparation of the sacred Balche drink and a sacred offrering to the Gods. In the Carribean it has historically been used as a fish toxin and also may be a useful natural organic pesticide; further research should be done on the chemistry of this tree.
