Traditional & Modern Use:
The Ephedra plants have been used in Chinese medicine for over 5000 years and these plants contain the controversial chemical ephedrine. E. sinica contains approximately 2.2% ephedrine. The history of use as a weight loss aid dates back for centuries but some governments have declared ephedrine unsafe. The most historically documented form of ingestion of the plants was a tea known as Mormon-tea. In North America any tea labeled as “Mormon-tea” has had all ephedrine removed from it since ephedrine has been banned for sale as a weight loss aid but it is still used in other places all over the world.
