Traditional Use:
Stories on ayahuasca vary from tribe to tribe and region to region. Ayahuasca, yage, caapi,etc. are all tribal names that refer to both the plant and the brew. Each tribe has a very specific origin myth associated with the vine. Most names translate to mean "vine of souls" or "vine of the dead" as it is believed that the departed climb to heaven on the vines. This fits well with the common motif of the "World Tree" or Axis Mundi. The roots are the underworld, the trunk the middle world or realm of people, and the canopy would be symbolic of the ethereal realm. Symbolism is complex and variable among the tribes.
